Computer supported
library work, system development and strategic vision
- the impact of information technology on Danish
public libraries. in: International Journal of
Information and Library Research, vol. 3, no. 2,
1991. pp. 87-110.
Abstract: The
implementation of information technology and its
impact on working conditions in Danish public
libraries is discussed. The development leading to
the present organization of work is outlined,
followed by a presentation of a research project (The
UDFO-project) on organizational development in public
libraries, conducted at the Royal Danish School of
Librarianship in Aalborg. The main findings of the
project are presented. A four-phase model of
information systems indicates a future strategic use
of IT in a user-oriented development of new tasks and
services. Managerial use of IT for surveillance and
decision making is noted in a scenario-like
discussion as well as the implementation of decision
support systems for co-operative mediating work in
team structures. The socio-political aspects of IT
impact on human resources in public libraries are
underlined.
